Songs To Learn And Sing - Episode 304

Viarosa - Where The Killers Run (Pronoia Records, 2006)

This episode featured two tracks from Viarosa's 2006 debut album. Where The Killers Run is a brilliant album that was described by Rough Trade Shops as imagine, "the bastard offspring of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen who had been taught to play by Johnny Cash and had spent his summer afternoons receiving singing lessons from Jim Morrison. it makes for a perfect atmospheric accompaniment to a late night bottle of whiskey." Americana UK called Viarosa's sound "Country Noir" and that tag fits perfectly.

The Adult Net - The Honey Tangle (Fontana Records, 1989)

We also played Take Me by The Adult Net. The band were formed by Brix Smith and Simon Rogers while they were both in The Fall and released four brilliant singles for Beggars Banquet Records between 1985 and 1986. The band eventually signed with Fontana and released their debut album The Honey Tangle in 1989. The line up constantly changed over the years, at one point when The Smiths broke up Mike Joyce, Andy Rourke and Craig Gannon all joined. By the time the album was recorded the line up included Craig Gannon on guitar, James Eller (The The) on bass and Clem Burke (Blondie) on drums. The Honey Tangle is a lost classic well worth checking out. The track Sad is a particular highlight with its string arrangement by Van Dyke Parks, played by the Brodsky Quartet.

Songs To Learn And Sing - Episode 303

Ebury Publishing (Softback, March 2010)

This epsode features a few tracks from Edwyn Collins because I've just finished reading Grace Maxwell's Falling and Laughing, her brilliant account of how Edwyn Collins (her partner of more than 20 years) suffered two brain haemorrhages in Feburary 2005 and his subsequent rehabilitation. It's an amazingly inspiring read - heartbreaking, harrowing and uplifting all at once. In September Heavenly Recordings will release Losing Sleep. The album features tracks co-written with Johnny Marr, Roddy Frame, Alex Kapranos & Nick McCarthy of Franz Ferdinand, Romeo Stodart of The Magic Numbers, Ryan Jarman of The Cribs and The Drums, and is the first album Edwyn’s written and recorded since his illness in 2005 (Home Again was recorded before his illness).

The Campaign For Real Rock and If You Could Love Me are both taken from 1994's Gorgeous George and The Magic Piper (Of love) and Keep On Burning were two of the singles from Edwyn's next album, 1997's I'm Not Following You. Both albums were released on Setanta Records. Below are two Setanta promo postcards from 1997 and a promo photo of Edwyn from 1994.

Falling and Laughing is highly recommended as is the BBC Scotland documentary Edwyn Collins: Home Again, which was first screened in May 2008. The documentary follows Edwyn's progress in recovering from his illness, and his subsequent return to live performance. It can be viewed below.
