Episode 305

Songs To Learn And Sing - Episode 305

John Phillips (John, the Wolfking of L.A.) - Varese Sarabande Records 2006

A few weeks ago we played a some tracks from Michelle Phillips, so on this episode we featured a couple of tracks from her former husband and Mamas & Papas bandmate, John. By 1969 The Mamas & the Papas were out of contract and split-up. In order to get the group back together Dunhill Records offered John a solo deal on his own label, Warlock Records. John gathered an amazing group of session musicians around him in his home studio. The players included some of the infamous Wreaking Crew (Hal Blaine, Larry Knechtel, Joe Osborn), James Burton and Red Rhodes. Wolfking is one of the best country rock  albums of all time, though upon its original release by Dunhill/Warlock it was almost ignored. The 2006 reissue features eight bonus tracks.
